This conference aims to advance research on the frontier zones of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, examining their transformations during periods of war, postwar transition, and the establishment of imperial or Soviet domination. Particular attention will be given to the movements of populations - whether voluntary or forced - along complex migratory trajectories, including internal exile through deportations and external exile through border crossings.

The discussions will foreground historiographical approaches that emphasize multi-scalar analysis, connected and comparative perspectives, and a focus on hybridity and interconnections, thereby seeking to capture the fluid and discontinuous nature of borders in Russian history. Contributions will engage with trans-imperial trajectories and visual methodologies to enrich our understanding of these processes.

As in other disciplines, the conference seeks to move beyond nation-centered narratives rooted in the archives of political cores, and to address a central question: How can a truly cross-border, transnational, and trans-imperial history be written? Participants will also reflect on methodological challenges associated with the “decentering” of perspective—a concept frequently invoked by contemporary academic communities, particularly those emerging from the post-Soviet space.

Organization: Juliette Cadiot (CERCEC-EHESS), Irina Tcherneva (Eur’Orbem Sorbonne-CNRS).
